        人肺泡上皮細胞由肺泡I型和Ⅱ型上皮細胞組成,線性分布于肺內99%以上的表面積。肺泡I型細胞是一種大而扁平細胞,其稀薄的細胞質延展占據了其內表面積的95%以上。它含有水通道,是所有哺乳動物細胞中水滲透性最高的細胞。肺泡Ⅱ型上皮細胞只占據了2-5%的面積,它能產生,分泌并再利用肺表面活性物質。肺泡Ⅱ型上皮細胞同時含有Na+-K+-ATP酶和阿米洛利敏感的上皮細胞Na+通道。目前被普遍接受的假說是肺泡Ⅱ型上皮細胞通過調節肺Na+傳遞的活性來維持著肺液體內環境穩定平衡,而肺泡I型細胞是無活性的細胞,僅提供屏障功能而無活化功能。新近的研究表明肺泡I型在調節離子和液體轉運過程中也具有重要作用。
        人肺泡上皮細胞提取于人肺組織,原代凍存。每管含有細胞數>1×10^6 cells/ml,此細胞通過Cytokeratin-18, -19和Vimentin免疫熒光染色驗證,經測試不含有HIV-1、HBV、HCV、支原體、細菌、酵母和真菌。
